Hanging ’round the farm for inspiration

It’s supposed to be the lazy days of summer, but time is flying here at my studio. I’ve got a darling little project that needs to be finished but this newsletter is not going to write itself waiting for me to finish it. So this month we’ll start with some progress shots. For sure I’ll be finished by next month. After visiting with my client, the initial direction to use her beautiful flowering gardens as inspiration. Then it changed as she thought the flowers and landscape could be minimal and a variety of farm animals take center stage. Here are the original sketches. I’m more than halfway done. Here’s one of the front panels and one side panel completed. I’ve been juggling deadlines to finish this, and you know I will. The farm theme also showed up in a painting I completed for Bella’s Café I (home of the best upscale comfort food in Connecticut) in New Haven. Painting in Paradise

This year started out with true change of venue for me. When Patrick Briel of Tripka Design, Milford, CT (www.TripkaDesign.com), asked me if I’d be interested in finishing some kitchen cabinets, I had to admit it’s not on the top of my list of favorite things to do. Dramatic pause. He finishes the question. On Saint John in the Virgin Islands. Like he had to ask twice. So a few days ahead of the last snowstorm we had here in Connecticut, I arrived in St. John. My husband Hans jumped to the front of the volunteer line, the extra set of hands to flip doors and drawers (and take care of driving on the wrong side of the road!) The agreed finish was simple and subtle: a softened stria in gray to provide a neutral background to the clean lines of the kitchen design. I’ve got pictures of the work in progress. Rooms with a View

The 21st interior design celebration, Rooms with a View, took place in Southport recently. Conceived as a brilliant church fundraiser under the auspices of the famed Albert Hadley (designer for the Kennedy White House, the Rockefellers, Astors and Gettys to name a few notable clients), each year the show embraces traditional and cutting edge design. Each of the twelve invited designers is given a space of 5′ x 8′ to create a vignette. They have a week to”build” their room, which comes quite simply with three walls and wiring for electricity. Then, the magic is on display for the weekend. This year was personally exciting to yours truly because the design team, Tracy Dwyer and Patrick Briel, from Westport’s Parc Monceau had asked me to paint a floor cloth that would be used in their vignette, The.Diving.Room. Too cool for words, I assure you. First, take a look at the room’s view. My rippling water over sand design painted on a canvas floor cloth is easily seen through the Lucite coffee table. Thankful for the Side Dishes

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and once I got this title in my head, I couldn’t let the metaphor go. Certainly it is the turkey that is the centerpiece of the traditional celebration, but it is those side dishes that add the flavors and creativity. And so it is with my own portfolio. Yes, mural painting is the foundation of my work, but this month was a perfect example of those “side dishes” that don’t come around all that often, but when they do, what a treat! The first project was a brick wall in a red palette that was just completely unacceptable for the marvelous kitchen renovation. My client thought a simple whitewashing would tone the color down. I have her permission to show you her thought to see how it might look. It was ingenious. She used chalk, and literally colored the bricks to check out the effect. Not good. The result was dirty pink and coral tones. Below is the sample I created once the background had been painted. And here’s how lovely it looked when completed. Keeping Grounded

I admit, One of the best things about being a decorative artist is I surely am never bored. The variety and scope of the challenge is constantly a surprise. This recent project is one that kept me grounded, both literally and philosophically. Literally, it entailed having the floors of the kitchen and breakfast area sanded to remove the existing work. Here is what I first encountered. Not only was the work dated-it involved some sponging with grout lines I think to simulate blocks- but the alternate layers of paint were separating and peeling. Enter Dino of Deckworks (203-258-9818) in Trumbull. The floors were sanded, primed and painted to provide me with a perfect canvas. Before I show you the process, take a look at how sweet these floors look now! The adjoining breakfast area… The palette was derived from the beautiful palette the countertops and existing cabinets provided. I thought a contemporary trellis design would play counterpoint to the square areas we were trying to marry-a basically square kitchen area with a step down to a long rectangular breakfast area. Not your grandmother’s cabinets…anymore!

I’m not asked often to redo kitchen cabinets. This recent project was a manageable size, and a great way to show you how effective paint can be in updating a kitchen. Keeping it short and sweet, here’s the finished kitchen. Here’s what it looked like before. These oak cabinets are fairly standard. There was no reason to justify ripping them out, but boy, did they look dated and boring. The granite was going to stay, as well as the floor. My client liked the route that I think is more than just trendy of having a different finish for the island. It’s been around for a few years and I believe it’s going to become a standard. Here’s the sample boards I did, as well as a new color with a lot of punch in its depth for the walls. My portion of the work was soooo easy. Super painter Dino Tetu and company (203-258-9818) dismantled the kitchen, removing all the panels, drawers and doors. These were primed, and then painted. Under the Weeping Cherry Tree

Sometimes the simple answer is the perfect answer. My client in this elegant Fairfield, Connecticut home had a section of wall that just glared, needing an solution that wouldn’t look too contrived. The wall was formed when the 12′ height of the kitchen dropped back to 8′ in the foyer and hallway. Here’s the kitchen before I started. Hanging a large painting just felt awkward. Thank you again for the always imaginative ( and superb) painter, Dino Tetu, who was on the job and suggested that I might be the solution. A discussion with the homeowner led to the direction of a painted window for the space. I noted that there were several window transoms in the home and thought the added architectural interest would look better than a big picture window. So, what to paint, what to paint? We discussed vistas that had appeal to the family (beaches were high on the list) but again, not feeling natural. As I walked through the first floor of the home, I was struck by the lovely trees I could see from every room and Voila! There is was. Fancy Fretwork

There was no clue on the outside of this home about the scrupulously period perfect design I would find within. Tastefully done, the Victorian interior was just delightful. The kitchen had been completely remodeled and there was a small wall that marked the end of the kitchen, and was visible walking down the hall. I chose to use “fretwork”, a decorative detail that’s found inside and outside of Victorian homes. It is recognized by its graceful, interlocking designs. Here’s my concept drawing. It was a good solution for an awkward space, and an opportunity to introduce architectural detail in trompe l’oeil (French, for “to fool the eye”) fashion. Here’s the design base coated. You can see, the design got a little more elaborate compared to the original sketch. I have to confess, I don’t often get the opportunity to do this particular type of ornament, and when I do, it’s a personal play day for me! The kitchen is a study in grey, so I chose to paint the base in light grey so I could use a nice crisp white in the highlights. Sharon’s Medicine For Cabin Fever

It’s still January and I’m taking advantage of the snowstorm that has cancelled work for the next few days. But being trapped inside can give you a bit of cabin fever. Are there some areas in your ‘cabin’ that are simply making you crazy. It’s a boring area, perhaps, or it just needs that little something but you can’t put your finger on it. And in the back of your head you’re thinking I probably can’t afford it. So here are a few solutions, with their costs. This project was a small add-on. I was already working in another room of the house. The bathroom was having some beautifully designed tile installed, making the plain white vanity suffer in comparison. Here, I painted a simple motif derived from the tile design onto the two cabinet doors. Cost: $225. Visual value? A home run. This second example is a headboard painted directly on the wall. Not only does it do what it needed to do-supply the missing furniture-but it’s fun to boot. Cost $600. What a great way to get a custom bedroom that exactly fits the space and personality of room. Just Scrolling Along

Sometimes I truly need to stop a minute to consider which project I’d like to share with you. Sure, part of me wants to impress you with most grand and extensive transformation on which I’m currently working. But this month, I came to a realization. I admit when I’ve rung your doorbell and I’m waiting for the door to open, the little voices in my head (yes, they are there al-l-l-l the time) are chattering away. “I hope there’s a dining room calling for a medallion….I hope when they said a little detailing in the foyer, it really meant a full scale mural complete with lions and tigers and bears, oh my.” Oh, I could go on. But those are the voices in MY head. What about the questions rolling around in my client’s head? “What made me even call her? This is going to be too expensive. What was I thinking-I’m sure she will think this project is too small.” So, the truth . I love those big, extensive, multi-room contracts. But there is huge satisfaction in small, one or two day jobs that result in a great impact. Those are equally as rewarding. Case in point. A recent […]
