It seems like forever since my last newsletter

Last May, I finished the largest project of my career, transforming a Masonic Lodge in Park Ridge, New Jersey into a painted Temple of Solomon. The year long project just took my concept of time and turned it on its head. One of the things that suffered was staying in touch with you, my most loyal newsletter readers. That massive undertaking, followed by a knee replacement simply took some time to get back to a regular schedule. I had been relying on Facebook and Instagram to share work, and honestly, I realized that trying to figure out an algorithm with Instagram was just too frustrating and limiting. So I’m back writing a newsletter, the best way I know to stay connected. So here are two recent projects that I hope you will enjoy. The first is a jewel of a powder room. Be Still My Heart!

There are some days when I believe the universe is more than ready to co-operate and send a project my way where I know that I will enjoy every single minute from concept to execution. And make a client’s dream come true? Probably mixing metaphors here, but that’s the frosting on the cake. So, the starting place. A spacious master bath, with great bones, beautiful fixtures, a floor that sends my imagination spinning and a client looking to get rid of her boring blue walls and she says the words. The key to my heart in secret code: I want you to make magic. Make it wow! Well, ok then. Let’s go. Here’s what the view looks like. I’ve reduced the color to black and white. Color will distract. We discussed ornament and the design is simply just pouring off my pencil. Drawing on the room’s photo makes it easy to visualize. We both agree Lusterstone, a luscious plaster infused with mica, will make the most of the light fixtures. One Serving of Magic

I’m not exactly sure when it happened. The day I officially believed, that perhaps, if I closed my eyes and wished as hard as I could, I could make paint magic. How arrogant and ridiculous! Years of honing my skills and working in the studio hours on end searching for the perfect, well, whatever, and I was willing to just give credit to “magic”. Like it just happened? The possibility may have crept in the day my talented designer friend Arianna Thill (actdesignct.com) posted this on Instagram. ”Fairy dust”. Indeed. If it’s on IG, it must be true. It tickled my fancy and so appealed to my ego. Have I mentioned, artists spend entirely too much time talking to themselves. Out loud sometimes. But there it was and soon enough comes my current client, she who owns this 100 plus year old buffet. It’s been in the family for generations and is in terrific shape. We’ll call her Miss C. She’s been receiving my newsletter (yes, the very same one you’re reading now) for several years and had been contemplating when she would have an opportunity to have me create something for her and her husband. I’m Seeing Red and I’m Loving It!

I say I always start at the beginning of the project, for over ten years of monthly newsletters. But I just can’t do it with this one. I’ve just got to show what I’m so over the moon about. Look at those red walls! And those swirls of bright gold! Makes you want to lift up your arms and twirl. And just smile. So now, lets get back to the beginning. Early autumn, 2019 (yes, pre-Covid times for sure.) I was brought to the project by Dyane Prezioso of Prezioso Interiors. We both share a love for color and drama and this room was going to be the ultimate place to indulge with that love. The project had several parts: the walls, the ceiling and a 100 year old buffet just crying for a new life. As we saw the room in the beginning, it sported a dated old world red glazed finish. The most accurate description would be tomato soup red. The white molding and ceiling did little to help matters. Dyane chose the perfect red. The picture doesn’t do it justice. Looking Back at Looking Up

OK, I’m not proud to admit it but there is a really bad outcome when two of my personality traits collide. I easily admit to being a bit technically challenged. Less easy to admit is that when there is a task at hand that I really don’t want to do, especially something requiring computer skills, I dig my heels in and become a first class procrastinator. And now I’m dealing with the fallout. I had to get rid of my beloved laptop because I kept accumulating photos way past the point of storage capacity. So I have a new laptop with tons more storage and I’m creating clutter and chaos. No way to avoid it. I’ve been cleaning up my mess. There was a silver lining. While sorting through hundreds ( OK, thousands) of old photos, I came across ceiling projects that for the most part, I don’t think I’ve ever posted. There might be a few that have showed up on my Instagram feed, but the fun was the older projects, done before I started this newsletter. And forgive the quality of a few of the older photographs. My New Favorite Bathroom

Can I have a favorite project? And without sounding shallow, can I have more than one? Hmmm…if I were being honest, my favorite projects generally have one thing in common. They involve murals, whether it be on one focal wall or be still my heart, when the chance comes to envelope the entire room. That being said, my newest project has no mural. But what it does have is the most exciting combination of a super color palette and textures. I’m a green person. When I first saw the vanity and granite countertop my client had chosen, it was love at first sight! The vibrant jungle colors caught in the Rainforest granite paired with the richness of the reclaimed wood of the vanity. The hammered copper sinks were perfect. Here’s a closeup of the granite. I was delighted to go with my client to choose the rest of the tile for the shower and floor. Even more so that she trusted my instinct for a dark green ceiling color. The feeling of a jungle canopy, but clean and contemporary. The walls needed a texture to hold up their end of the balance. It’s a simple finish, proof that in some […]

The Dragon’s Tail

Since this project was conceived months ago, it’s been living in the crazy part of my psyche. Many are the times I would play back the proposal and wonder: what was I thinking? Surely, this was insane. Up until the actual moment of installation, I questioned the process and for a moment of terror thought this might not work. Wrong, oh so wrong. So to the beginning of the story. A tiny powder room, square footage wise, 6 feet by barely 4. But competing with a powerful piece of inspiration. This is the mirror with the dragon frame. I needed to design something that could hold its own against such drama. And I came up with the idea of a magnificent dragon’s tail, unfurling itself across the walls. And that’s when crazy entered the picture. I’m currently having a love affair with mica, adding it as a layer to plaster finishes, and I thought, this was the perfect solution. The raw mica comes in blocks, and one splits the sheets apart. I could cut the scales out of mica. They would come alive as light hit and reflected around the room. Amazing Mica

I met the mineral mica several years ago. Mica infused plasters have been part of my portfolio for many years now. But recently, I got to rediscover Mica in a brand new way. Great big chunks of it! Glittering in amber, champagne, bronze pearl and gold tones. Let me show you my samples for this outrageously gorgeous powder room I just completed. The ceiling sample shimmers with layers of mineral. The wall finish has treasure pockets of mica buried in layers of mica infused plaster set on a metallic background. Here is a close-up of the ceiling with the perfect chandelier. Below is the finished room. I am so psyched about using mica more in the future. Love to know what you think about it. Making a Statement

I’m not sure when the trend began, but you’ve probably come across that one wall in a room painted a different color. The design term is “accent walls” or “focal walls.” Bold and dramatic and for sure, four walls of it would be too much! I recently heard them referred to as “statement walls”. As I think about it, a lot more goes into designing the perfect statement than just picking a color. I recently had the pleasure of working with the talented Lisa Fero of Trumbull. Check out her work at www.lisaferointeriors.com. Lisa has a great sense of color and her rooms look fresh yet layered with sophistication. My part in this room was to create a textured wall finish that would indeed make a statement. Here’s a picture of the sample Lisa chose. It has several layers of mica infused plaster as well as a smoky beige metallic paint. Here is the carpet, fabric and parts of the room that inspired this artisan finish. The Fifth Wall… Forget Me Not

Thank you so much to each and every one of you that send me your choice of your favorite powder room. I loved the feedback. It was so much fun compiling that last newsletter, I thought, let’s do it again. So here we go. Ceilings are often referred to as the “fifth wall”. And way too often, they are simply ignored. There are so many solutions that there is no excuse not to consider that ceiling the next time you are looking up at the expanse of flat ceiling white paint. If you’ve got crown molding already (or are considering it), make it pop with anything but white. Here’s my answer to adding color and a few simple stripes for a simple solution. Below is an area of mica infused plaster that reflects the chandelier’s light. A border and shadow give dimension. A ceiling treatment does not have to utilize the entire ceiling. Here are two trompe l’oeil medallions that add focus but are modest in dimension. I see many master bedrooms that have very deep trays, with the sides being three to four feet.
